New Orleans and Gulf Coast
So much tragedy - so much lost or ruined or dead. Heartache, worry, pain - it feels as if I've been crying for days. These are our people - this is OUR COUNTRY - and finally, finally, things seemed to be going the way they should have. I don't know who's to blame for the delay and the problems, I don't know why, or understand. All I know is I've seen the news, read the papers, and my heart breaks for every single one of you.
Lowes is matching the donations dollar for dollar to the American Red Cross. My husband and I went yesterday and donated.
The animals have worried me greatly as well. You know how I feel about my dogs. I could bear losing my house, my belongings, my cars - these could be replaced. But not my puppies. Petsmart and Petco are both doing charities for the animals - I've donated to both, as well as to the American Human Society and to the Humane Society of America. If I could give more, the SPCA would receive money as well.
Writers are also organizing charities. I've learned one of my writer friends, Delores Fossen, made it out with her daughter, but can't get gasoline to drive to hook up with her husband and handicapped son. Until gasoline is available where she is, I guess she can't get there. I wish I could help. Dee - if you ever read this - I'm sorry I couldn't help you.
I've heard so many other stories of people helping - a millionaire chartering a plane, John Grisham donating $5 million dollars, Sean Penn going down and helping rescue people. Stars organizing a benefit. Nora Roberts is also doing some sort of charity, or so I've heard.
Even $5.00 can help - a child, a pet, a person.
I've been crying so much, I'm scared of what they will find when they finally get the city drained. What the death toll will be. What kind of pictures we will see on the news. The devastation, the horrors.
That's all for now.
